It Happened at Pomona, Part 2

The second part of the year-long exhibition “It Happened at Pomona: Art at the Edge of Los Angeles 1969 to 1973, ” began earlier this month, and this part focuses on Helene Winer’s time as museum director from 1970 -72. Winer talked to Artforum about her Pomona days, when she showed work from Allen Ruppersberg, William Leavitt, Bas Jan Ader, John Baldessari, Chris Burden, William Wegman and many others. She tells the magazine:

There is an element present in all of their works that became indicative of a hybrid Los Angeles Conceptualism that made use of prominent and quirky visual material, theatricality, and humor. These artists strayed from the tightly scripted parameters of the New York Conceptualists, and without declaration they adapted the intellectual and cultural environment of the area.

It Happened is part of the Getty Foundation’s multi-venue collaboration “Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980.” To learn about Part 1 of It Happened, read Christopher Michno’s review in Art Ltd.

You’ll also find more on Part 1 at Art Net, The Daily Beast, Los Angeles Magazine , ArtSlant and the Los Angeles Times. Finally, the fall issue of this magazine included a piece by Suzanne Muchnic on the making of It Happened at Pomona.
